19.Jul.2011 Disco Dive Pool Party DTLA - Lazaroc

With Summer swinging into full effect, and Will Newton some how becoming the biggest contributor to the blog I found it necessary to update ya’ll with whats good on the West Coast.Sunday, known as the day of rest to many, is known as the day of rage to many others. Day time parties such as “The Do-Over” have established that people here in the lovely city of Los Angeles are ready to party, and party hard. “Sunday Funday” has always been an institution amongst the bars/restaurants of Gainesville, but the beat of LA has taken it to new heights.

“The Get Up” had its first of what will hopefully be many Sunday Parties. You got to get down to get up, right? Highlights marked The Cool Haus Icecream Sandwich food truck and many other tasty options for the Early Brunch Crowd. Jams provided by many djs including Dim Maks own Them Jeans. The event had a few non-profits raising awareness for peace in the Congo, Breast Cancer, and healing trauma through music and art. An overall feel good experience, and plenty of entertainment.

The double header of a Sunday was followed up with the fourth of The Disco Dive Pool Party series at The Standard Hotel DTLA. As always the party at The Standard didn’t disappoint. The sun was shinning as the bathing suits came out and bodies crowded the rooftop pool as Ed Gold got the party bouncing. There was plenty space to layout on the AstroTurf lawn or on the over sized couches when the dancing became a bit tiring. I have to give credit to my boy Conor for going hard and Rollingtuff. Think my highlight of the afternoon was watching and hearing the lovely ladies of POSSO, Vanessa Giovacchini & Marylouise Pels, play a great set and look great while doing it.

Thats really all I have till this upcoming weekend, more rooftop parties, sunshine, and good times. Hope you’re enjoying your summer and anxiously awaiting the return of Florida Tailgate season.

11.Jul.2011 MOOMBAHTON POOL PARTY - Will

Have you ever danced on the top of a 14 story hotel balcony pool with beautiful people and sexy moombeats? If not, I strongly suggest you get familiar with it. Moombahton isn’t slowing down, and intimate gigs like this are adding fuel to the moombahfire.

DJs OBEYAH and Billy the Gent bumped some sick jams while all present got their groove on. Heineken girls in white bikinis made their rounds giving out free Heineken Lights. The crowd was grown and sexy, and everybody was fun and friendly, so much that an impromptu vollyball game resulted when the inflatable beach balls were introduced. Then all hell broke loose (and I screamed like a little girl) when Dave Nada made a special guest appearance and made love to our ears.

Nada and myself, moombouncing in the sunset.

For a full report on the party, check out this article by Marcus Dowling.

Check out some of the flicks I snagged while I wasn’t too busy getting my jam on:

22.Jun.2011 Go Skateboarding Day in Washington D.C. 2011 - Will

The Summer Solstice, a day of celebration for those around the world who love summer. A somewhat lesser known, yet much cooler and more gnarly holiday on the very same day is Go Skateboarding Day. June 21st has been internationally recognized as the official ‘Go Skate’ day for years now. In Washington, D.C, hundreds of skateboarders shredded from the Palace 5ive skateshop to Freedom Plaza and then tore up Pennsylvania Ave for the rest of the day, dodging cops and pissing off security guards.

I wore skate shoes and brought my board to my day job and promptly joined in the skate session at 5:00 pm. I got to enjoy shredding and take some pics with some of the coolest kids I’ve met in DC so far. It was oodles of fun.

Proof.

Scope out the photos by clicking on the logo below, feel free to use them for whatever purpose you choose.

Thanks a ton to all my new friends I met who showed me the ins and outs of the nation’s capital on Go Skateboarding Day.

Cheers!

19.Jun.2011 Moombahton MASSIVE // MEGA @ IBIZA - Will

MOOMBAH-WHAT?

According to legend, DJ Dave Nada invented Moombahton at a basement house party in Prince George’s County. The formula went something like this: Take house music (specifically Dutch house, which tends to be more tribal and angular in feel than traditional house), drag it through a bed of molasses and add reggaeton and Latin beats. Also mandatory: slow, sometimes endless builds, stuttery vocals and firetruck noises.”

So how do you dance to Moombahton? I got a few lessons at Moombahton Massive on Thursday night. I’ve never seen such a huge number of people getting down at 108 bpm. If you’re not familiar, get familiar:

Oh yeah, and I’m pretty sure I fell in love with Jen Lasher.

Jen Lasher & Dave Nada rocking the house.

Moombahton.com puts it quite eloquently:

Nadastrom’s set was the exact moment when Dave Nada became a pop star DJ. He, alongside Matt Nordstrom spun tracks that elicited a volcanic response. At any moment, a ceiling dripping in condensation from a room filled to capacity could’ve crumbled and the party would’ve kept going. Tittsworth and Alvin Risk’s “Pendejas,” Munchi’s “Sandungeo” and the track that started it all, Dave Nada’s “Moombahton” went off like explosive land mines. Nadastrom’s twin remixes of Alex Clare’s “Too Close” and “Up All Night ” alongside the dancehall edit of Jamie XX’s remix of  Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” added expansive joy and a glee filled sing along to the proceedings. The debuting David Heartbreak and Nadastrom co-production moombahton edit/blend of Nina Simone’s “See Line Woman” and James Blake’s “Limit to Your Love” was the coup de grace, tearing souls asunder as percussion plunged into bodies and lifted spirits to the sky.

Epic time had by all. I wish I had more pictures but I was too busy dancing like these guys:

Moombahton Massive was a great introduction to DC nightlife,

and prepared me for MEGA at Ibiza featuring the likes of Mister P, Flux Pavillion, and Porter Robinson to name a few.

No lack of lasers from MEGA at Club Ibiza, Washington D.C.

The show was everything I expected, lots of lights, babes, booze and sweaty bodies. The ‘no dress code’ rule allowed for an eclectic crowd. Lots of ravers downstairs, lots of would-be classy folk up on the balconies. The line wrapped around the corner and reportedly took over 2 hours to reach the front. I learned that the owners are nice, the VIP bouncers are not, and Russian girls from South Carolina get wet for vodka redbulls.
