Looks like UF and the RTS bus system are having trouble keeping terrible people from sneaking onto buses without paying.

The best part of the whole deal is that they can’t do anything to stop it. Since the Gator 1 isn’t a state issued ID, you can’t be charged with any crime for using someone else’s ID to sneak on the bus. Current punishments include “receiving a particularly angry scowl,” “yelling in broken English,” and “complete apathy.”

It would be interesting to see the statistics on how much money RTS loses from Gator 1 fraud. There are only two types of people who abuse the system: Santa Fe kids who photocopy their friend’s ID onto card stock because they go to Santa Fe, and your bro from FSU who’s coming up for the weekend, and you totally want to show him a night on the town, but on a budget. Financial Aid hasn’t come in, and Sharab’s cover is higher than ever. They must make up like 2% of bus riders, costing the school up to $600 a year in lost revenue.

I wonder if they can make it up with some kind of luxury bus service. What if for $10, you can ride a bus with pictures of South Beach pasted on the windows to make you feel like you’re partying in a cool city. There must be some demand for that.
